FID - Histamines in legumes

Hi,

I recently started with the FID program and eat mainly vegetarian, so I consume quite a few legumes. Just saw in your recent Histamine Food Chart that all beans and lentils contain high amounts of histamines and got a bit confused since they are still on the FID program. Why is that?

I consider avoiding them but guess it will be hard to get my proteins if not going back to a meat-based diet. Any tips?

Happy about any comments on this and already wanted to say a big thank you for all the efforts on this page. Getting my hope up after struggling with eczema on my scalp for more than 20 yrs. ❤️

Lots of love.

Hi A,

Thank you so much for your post and your kind words about the website. I’m really glad to hear that it's been helpful for you! 😊

This is a really good question! Just as you test salicylates and amines on FID, it's also important to test histamine-rich foods if you're still dealing with flare-ups and trying to identify your triggers.

Legumes can sometimes contribute to histamine production, which may explain ongoing flare-ups on FID for some people. Because everyone is different, legumes could be a potential trigger if you're not seeing improvements in your skin.

If you’re still experiencing issues after being on FID diet for a while, we recommend removing legumes and seeing how your skin goes. Once your skin has healed, you can reintroduce them slowly.

Not all legumes are high in histamines, but some, like peanuts, soybeans, peas, and kidney beans are. However, legume sprouts, like beansprouts, are a good source of diamine oxidase (DAO), an enzyme that breaks down histamine.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further questions.
