Scabies - Prevention

Hi there,

There's a scabies outbreak in the UK region where I am at the moment.

I've read up and know that it can be got rid of quite easily and effectively if the treatment is followed precisely.

A few questions it would be great to have your thoughts, information, responses to:

  • other than avoiding skin contact or sharing material items with someone who has it or is maybe suspected to have it, has anyone got some good tips for prevention?

  • The main treatment here is Premethrin - this is a cream. One of the potential side effects is a skin reaction to it. Has anyone got experience of this?

  • The other treatment is ivermectin - oral - normally if the cream hasn't worked. Again, anyone had to take this and if so, what was the result on the skin?

  • What would be the best one on balance to try and get from the chemist or GP for someone with skin issues - the cream or the oral tablet which works internally? ie which would be least disruptive?

Any thoughts?

I am going to try and get some in advance so that I am prepared, because I don't want to have to rush into taking something that is more detrimental to the skin and causes more problems, simply because I have to get something really quick, when I could have got a less disruptive option.

Any advice really welcome, and thanks in advance!
