Location of eczema and its cause

Hi, did you ever had read scientific articles or observed a link between the location of eczema on the body and what causes it? I wonder because I have eczema on my hands only, and this for 8 years, while the rest of my body does not experience any sensitive skin.

Thank you

Hi Laurence,

Sorry to hear that- I know how difficult eczema can be, especially on the hands. Some research and traditional medicine perspectives show that chronic hand eczema could be linked to internal factors, including organ function.

While modern dermatology primarily attributes hand eczema to genetic, environmental, and immune system triggers, emerging research explores possible internal connections:

Gut-Skin Connection

  • Research has shown that gut health plays a role in skin conditions, including eczema. An imbalance in gut microbiota (dysbiosis) or increased intestinal permeability ("leaky gut") may contribute to chronic inflammation and eczema.

  • Some studies suggest that improving gut health through probiotics, prebiotics, and an anti-inflammatory diet (which is what the eczema diet is) can help manage eczema symptoms.

Liver Function & Detoxification

  • The liver plays a key role in detoxification, and if it’s not functioning optimally, toxins may be eliminated through the skin, potentially worsening eczema.

  • Some people with eczema see improvements by supporting liver health through diet and reducing chemical exposure (e.g., salicylates, amines, alcohol, and environmental toxins).

Stress & Nervous System Involvement

  • Chronic stress can impact the adrenal glands, increasing cortisol levels, which in turn may contribute to inflammation and skin flare-ups.

  • Eczema that worsens in the evening could be related to cortisol fluctuations throughout the day.

  • Stress management techniques (mindfulness, deep breathing, sleep optimisation) may help reduce the eczema.

I recommend checking out our blog on this topic which dives deeper and also shares advice on what you can do to help your hand eczema.
